Every year I've made a birthday cake for my niece based on her party them. This year was mermaids and I wanted to have a mermaid but since I'm not a full blown artist I knew I couldn't make a face that wasn't scary so I cheated with the Barbie standing in the cake and added the tail to look like she's sitting on the rock.

I had some tail fails. First thinking I could use cake pop mix. Then too big but I finally succeeded with rice Krispy base covered in marshmellow fondant textured with a beveled scraper.

I also discovered luster dust to add a little glimmer.

Flounder was made with marshmellow fondant:

I painted chocolate molds for colored shell's and melted jolly ranchers for candied roses. White chocolate was my glue to hold it all together.

If you are going to be spending a few days working on a cake I recommend Richs bettercreme. It's just easy to work with and is good at room temp for over 7 days! Here is the link:https://amzn.to/44L9Gnk

The candy shell's fish and mermaid tails made out if white chocolate were so easy with these molds:https://amzn.to/3KkCXNg

Using lemon extract or alcohol makes it easy to pain on luster dust. These had a great variety and took the cake to the next level:https://amzn.to/3OyIdQ5

Dust sprayers can help but take some time and a workout to really show the color: https://amzn.to/3Oy4Zr5
